2009 LVMS Corner Worker Feedback
March 28, 2009 DAY1
We arrived early 7:30 AM at the race track of Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was perfect sunny day with chill breeze, I think March might be the perfect time in the year to ride there.
In the background we could hear NAS-cas ripping through the corners loud as a train and it was only one car. Shortly after brief conversation with AJ(head guy for corner workers on that event) we got associated to the proper corners.
Thirty minutes later students were already at the race track committing all kinds of crimes like "duck feet", "stiff arms" or wrong lines with corrections in the mid turn.
Corner workers are totally part of the training team, an extra set of eyes all over the track. It was actually pleasant to report on that information and have small impact on the teaching process. Helping people always feel good especially when both parties are gaining experience and knowledge. As the day was passing session by session, people were getting used to the track and proper lines, speed improved rapidly especially in the corners. Riding with that crowd was getting more and more enjoyable until we reached the lunch time when all of them including instructors were out for 45 min brake time. From that point it was a blast, I could use the pace I wanted to go with, test different lines, acceleration points and late braking. Got my hands on everything I needed to the point when tires said no more. After that part of the day I was....literally done!!! First time of my life I felt that I had enough ride for today. My legs were killing me from constantly re-positioning body, going up left down, up left right, move forward, move back totally destroyed my injured muscles. I was barely able to walk but recovery went fast and I was still riding later on. Thank God I had some ibuprofen gel and gallons of water!!!
First day was amazing. Kind of crazy to think about how much concentrated instruction can be crammed into one day course:
Students were pushed through:
· Personal on-track riding instructors
· Level specific classroom instructors
· Off-track Brakebike coach
· Camerabike and riding review
All of this training conducted on what has to be the most radical bike course in North America controlled by Course Czar Trevor. I was happy to be there and gain that knowledge.
The day one was officially done at 5 PM. After I did a small clean up of my station we head down to garage drop off the bikes and start thinking about some huge diner.
"First day behind guys, nobody crashed?? -- this is unusual!!! Great job guys!!!" -I heard that comment a lot.
It was a brutal day for all of us but still everybody left the track with the smile on a face. I was looking forward for the next day improvements!!!
